Low Fell - Lake District Walk
Tuesday 7th November 2017
After a morning of rain we were able to get out for a short walk. Rather than tackle something new or stay on the flat we opted for an out and back walk to Low Fell from Thackthwaite.
Start: Thackthwaite (NY 1484 2368)
Route: Thackthwaite - Watching Crag - Low Fell - Watching Crag - Thackthwaite
Distance: 3.5 miles Ascent: 378 metres Time Taken: 2 hrs 30 mins
Terrain: Good paths
Weather: Dry and cool.
Pub Visited: Kirkstile Inn Ale Drunk: Grasmoor Dark
After a wet walk up the track from Thackthwaite we emerged onto a field and a view of the ridge we would be walking around.
As we climbed the view across the valley to Kirk Fell opened up.
The way ahead appears to be blocked by the sheep, although they soon ran off once we approached.
Although it was a nice and easy climb the path was very wet as a result of all the rain that had fallen over the previous twenty-four hours.
Fellbarrow is visible across the valley, although it looks close from here we know from experince it is too far for today's walk.
After crossing two stiles the summit of Low Fell comes into view.
We take the time to admire the view across towards Whiteside and Grasmoor.
As well as the fine view along Crummock Water.
Time to head for the summit, I hope those summit hoggers are going to shift before we get there.
By the time we reached Low Fell's summit cairn they had disappeared.
Rather than continue along the ridge towards Darling Fell we look for a sheltered spot for a late lunch.
Lunch is taken with a fine view across the valley that includes Carling Knott and Burnbank Fell.
As we start to head back it looks like it is brightening up over Kirk Fell.
Looking towards Ladyside Pike and there is definite patch of blue sky overhead.
A final view of Crummock Water and Mellbreak before we leave the top and head back down the track.
We retrace our steps along the track avoiding the worst of the puddles.
